Thankful Thursday 3

Today I am thankful for my oldest daughter “Love”.

maddie

There never was a more helpful child.  Or a more Loving child.  She is always willing to throw her arms around my neck and not hurry off to play.  She also watches out for her sisters with such care.  It’s amazing to see her take her little sister and get her shoes and coat on her and take her little hand and walk outside to play together.  Makes my heart melt.

So why do we call her Love?  This girl is the most loving.  She writes me love notes all the time.  Here is one:

Love is also an amazing artist.  For Halloween last year she decided to go out and draw a picture of our house.  Then she came in and decorated the picture for Halloween.  I was blown away.  She’s only in 3rd grade.  She did such a great job:

It took us quite a while to get Love here and we know our family would not be the same without her!!  Thanks for your sweet loving personality!!  Mommie loves you so so much!!

Hi!  I am Jaime from Crafty Scrappy Happy
I am beyond honored to be here today, I am new at guest blogging but have SO enjoyed learning from Connie.  Not only is Connie a talented blogger but she has also been beyond kind to me!  Blogging is an amazing way not only to be crafty-a-ly inspired but also to meet and get to know the great people who are so very inspired!  I would so love to get to know all of you!
Now let me introduce myself:
I am a nerdy student soon to be dentist who is beyond in love with being crafty scrappy and happy all while living on a non-existent budget!  I love all things vintage and antique.
I am a crafty gal who loves to up-cycle and do it myself!  I am constantly trying to find ways to make meaningful decor for my home.  I LOVE trying new techniques and letting my blogging friends learn from my mistakes!
{Ohh and I must mention I am crazy in love with my husband-Cal (not pictured ahh haha-did I mention I have a dumb sense of humor also?) and my two golden retrievers-Quincy and Kylie}
I would love to share a little project with you today highlighting my love for up-cycled usable and meaningful crafts (sometimes even all at the same time)?!?! I started with a steal of a deal cabinet door from a re-cycle home type thrift store.
1.  I sanded (kind of because I am a bit lazy), painted the cabinet door and a scrabble game piece holder at the same time, I distressed both big time and then picked out some of my favorite scrapbook paper (I have many so this isn’t as easy as it sounds).
2.  Since the cabinet door in-set was a strange shape I trimmed my scrapbook paper and then sanded the edges to make sure everything was sized just right and distressed looking.
3.  Ahhh and then just add mod podge to seal her on
4.  This is where I came to my dilemma point—my original plan was to embrace a menu type look of the board while using a scrabble holder to hold the menu/recipe card……. butttt then I had some other ideas
Display for special pictures and sayings, recipe card holder, quote holder…you pick!
Here are a few of my more recent projects:
Check out my past projects and wayyy tooo in-depth tutorials by clicking here.
:o )
And then there is my ever changing mantle:
I love to share my crafts and I love making new blog friends, please stop by my blog

Without further ado, here is my review:

I loved this book.  It was completely mesmerizing.  I felt like I was living on the home front during WWII.  I fell in love with Henry and Keiko and let’s not forget Sheldon.  Jamie Ford brought this era to life for me.  He gave me a first hand look into the relocation of Japanese Americans.  A time I must admit I didn’t know much about.  I remember learning that the U.S. had rounded up Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but it was always glossed over.  The impression I was left with was that there was good reason for the roundup and that Japanese Americans were treated well and conditions were nice.  This book opened my eyes to the reality of the situation.  It made me want to learn more about this time in our history. I can imagine a dark hotel basement filled  with dusty possessions.  Reminders of a forgotten time.  I longed {along with Henry} to hear how Keiko was doing and grew disheartened as letters were few and far between.  I felt betrayed when I learned how Henry’s father had played a hand in the letter writing.  But so hopeful for their reunion.  I closed the final page and actually had to tell myself ok you live in 2011.  Come back from the war.  And it took a moment because I felt like I was right there with Henry and Keiko.

I hope you loved it as much as I did.  Here are some discussion questions.  Feel free to answer these questions or just discuss the book.

  • Why doesn’t Henry’s father want him to speak Cantonese at home?  How does this decision relate to his desire to send Henry to China for schooling?  Is he sending a mixed message?
  • If you were Henry would you forgive your father?
  • What struggles did your own ancestors have in their journey to America?  Did they incorporate aspects of their culture into their new identities as Americans?
  • Does Henry give up on Keiko too easily?
  • Should Keiko have made more of an effort to find Henry?
  • Do you think Ethel knew what was happening with Henry’s letters?
  • Do you think Ethel was Henry’s second choice?
  • Were you aware of the plight of Japanese Americans during this time?  Were your eyes opened as mine were?

I cannot wait to hear your reaction to this novel!!  I obviously loved it but feel free to disagree with me.  Let’s have a great discussion!!  I will draw the winner on May 2nd when I post Mays Book Club selection.

Hand Knitting bracelets

The other day I stumbled upon this great post for hand knitting some cute bracelets.  Do you remember doing this as a kid??  You weave the string through your fingers and then start hand knitting.  It was so fun to step back in time to when I was a little girl doing this.  Great tutorial!!  So here is what I made with it:

hand knit bracelet

I used an old t shirt and cut it up.  So mine is a little rougher than hers.  But I like that.

I also made a super long one:

hand kint necklace

hand kint necklace 1

The jury is still out on the longer one.  I kinda like it as a belt.  What do you think?

“Laughter” loved it so much she wore it to school for her bday. { In her own personal style of course}

hand kint necklace 2

It was super easy and fun to make.  And even though I cannot decide about the longer one, I did love love love the wrist bracelet.  Super cute, Super easy, I want one in every color.  Let me know if you make some of these.

Twirl away Darlings–you’re covered!!

I am so excited to have Becky here from Creative Contentment!!  It’s amazing to me that even half way around the world, we are all still mommies trying to do the best for our kids.  {and craft a little along the way} This tutorial is a must see.  Modesty and protecting our precious little ones is so important!!  Read on to see how Becky did it with Love:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi there (Merhaba), I’m visiting from over in Turkey. Connie invited me over to share a bit of my ‘use what you have’ theme, Thank you so much Connie. It is fun being here and have appreciated your simple approach to creating with love.
But the first order of business for me is always to get a cup a tea. So I poured myself  a cup and wanted to ask you to join me before we begin. ;)
I have lived here in Turkey for 6 years. We have 3 kiddos. Living here has put my life into perspective and helped me to see that contentment is a choice and gift. I love to create and have learned to find the things around me to make creations of love.   Well let’s begin: I have two girlies and they are just that girly. They love to wear skirts and my younger of the two especially likes the twirly skirts and loves to twirl. She is pretty insistent on skirts every day, all day. :)
So as we know after Spring comes Summer, I considered buying some stretchy shorts for under their skirts and dresses for all that twirling and sliding down slides etc. they will be doing.
I have always wanted to make sure they are covered and still able to play without restriction.
So I decided I would Spring clean and see what I could find.
‘Use what you have’ is my theme so instead of putting on my shopping list ‘shorts for under skirts’,  I opened the girls dresser and these were my finds. Perfect for my idea:
So here is what I did to ensure that my girls could
twirl, whirl, jump rope, slide down slides and still be modest and covered. ;)
 Here’s the
QUICK PIC TUT
Some shorts can be pretty uncomfortable under skirts so I wanted to find the stretchy kind that would feel more natural for them.  I think these will work great and not be to bulky.
RE-USEING TIGHTS  Since the girls have lots of tights from the winter and several with holes I went to work on those too.  I figure  in summer they may be too hot but until then I can get a little more use out of them.  I think they are pretty cute and my middle girly really likes them especially with the ruffle.
One thing I realized and then had to redo is to stretch the tights out and then measure the ribbon. While I sewed I continued to make sure the leg was stretched well and then I sewed on the ribbon. I hand stitched the tights. Truth is I just don’t mind hand stitching ~ I think it can be therapeutic sometimes. :)
Ok, ready for my darlings to twirl away.
So that’s that.  The thing I like about this idea so much is not that I turned pants into shorts
( so not an original idea) but that I was able to find a solution for a need
without immediately going out and just buying something.
My theme for this season in life is:
Honor God, live simply, invest in others, ‘use what you have’ and give the rest away.
Connie thank you so much for featuring me and this simple ‘use what you have’ project!’ I have enjoyed getting to know you a bit and it has been fun hanging out on your blog. :) I am always amazed at how some things can have the simplest solutions. ~becky from over at Creative Contentment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks Becky!!  I absolutely love this tutorial!!  I want to steal your line {twirl away darlings you’re covered} and put it in my girls room.
Everyone head over to Creative Contentment and give Becky some love!!  Her blog is a great place to spend an afternoon…or two…or three.

Hats Hats and More Hats {crocheted that is}

Ok I have a kind of obsession with crochet.  I know I will join a support group.  I like it cus it’s something I can do in my down time that doesn’t require me sequestering myself away from everyone and it doesn’t make a huge mess.  But I have to admit crochet isn’t super trendy.  It can be hard to fine cute patterns.  And finding cute free patterns.  Forget it.  So I tried to make my own.
crochet hat side view
What do you think?  Is anyone interested in the patterns for these hats?  If so I will post them.  I have added the first hat to my WhoopdWhoop account.  {not sure what whoopdwhoop is?  Go check it out you can get things without money}  Leave me a comment if you want the patterns and I will get them posted.
I’m linking to these awesome blogs!!
