Princess Academy

by Shannon Hale

I met a super cute blogger Annie earlier this week and she told me her mother is working with the author to compose a musical score for this book.  They are making a Princess Academy Musical.  How fun!!

Ok here is my review:

I liked this book a lot.  It didn’t give me any deep, moving revelations, but it was a great easy read.  I could relate with the citizens of Mt. Eskel especially Miri.  I would have been one of the first ones working in the mine, but I think everyone can relate to feeling left out.  I was so happy for everyone when she figured out how scammed they had been in trading with the lowlanders.  I was torn between wanting Miri to become the princess {come on who doesn’t want to be a princess} and staying with Peder.  I do think the ending was a bit too convenient with the big revelation that Britta was fooling everyone and really in love with the prince.  And that he wanted to marry her too.  But overall it was a great read.

Now I want to hear what you thought of this book.  I’m super excited to remind you all about our awesome sponsor for this month JMP Designs!!  And here is what your comments could win you:

Upcycled Statement Necklace

So to enter the giveaway you need to be a follower.  Then simply comment on the book.  Leave your review, ask a question you had while reading, answer someone’s question, basically discuss the book.  There are no limits to the amount of entries you can have just make sure you are discussing Princess Academy.

Here are some discussion questions for you:

  1. As you read the book, were there times you wished for Miri to be chosen as princess? And times when you hoped she would not be chosen?
  2. What qualities does Miri have that helped her to make friendships with the other girls, even the more difficult ones like Katar?
  3. What did you think of “quarry-speaking?” If you had the same ability, how would you use it?
  4. What was the most exciting portion of the book? What made it so exciting?
  5. The girls disliked and feared her, but was there anything about Olana that made her a good choice to be their tutor?
  6. Who seems like a better match for Miri: Prince Steffan or Peder? In what ways?
  7. How did Miri’s visit to Asland change the way she thought of her Mount Eskel home?
  8. Discuss some of the ways Kiri’s relationships with the rest of her family are especially important to her story.
  9. How did the lessons in diplomacy, conversation, and courtesy help Miri and the other academy members?
  10. In what ways is Miri similar to the miri flower which inspired her name?

I can’t wait to hear what you thought.  Good luck on the giveaway.  It will end June 30th at midnight and the winner will be announced July 1st.

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for something to look forward to.  For those that don’t know, we are currently house hunting.  It has been a hard process.  Everything we love has a major draw back to it.  Plus we are trying to stay in the same community so it completely narrows down our options.  And I keep holding back on major craft projects because we are moving and half packed.  So if you notice things getting a little sparse around here, just know that we are probably out with our realtor {where we have been every free moment for months} and or my crafty stuff is packed.  But I will try not to slack off too bad.

Anyway, now that I have gotten completely off track, I am happy to have something to look forward to.  I am so excited to get settled in our home {once we find it}.  One of my favorite things to do is make a lovely space for my family and I am so looking forward to it!!  I have been pinning decorating ideas like crazy lately and here are some of my favorites:

Cheesecake

super yummy cheesecake

I LOVE me some cheesecake!!  Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!!  So over the years I have tried A LOT of recipes for cheesecake and here it is, the very best one ever!!

best ever cheesecake yummy

I make mine in cupcake wrappers.  It makes it much easier to take to parties.  People can just grab one, no plates or utensils needed.  Here’s the recipe:

Oreo crust optional:

1 package Oreo cookies {my hubbs thinks double stuff is a must here}

4 Tablespoons butter melted

crush Oreos and pour melted butter over.  mix until it forms a crust.  Push into the bottom of a lined cupcake pan.

Cheesecake:

3 packages cream cheese

1 can sweetened condensed milk

3 eggs

flavoring of your choice {I like almond or vanilla or orange or…}

beat all ingredients together.  then pour into lined cupcake pan.  Fill 3/4 full.  Bake on 350 for about 45 mins.  or until center is set.  Enjoy!!

I sometimes melt some chocolate and drizzle it over the top.  Super yummy!!

Let me know if you make these!!

Speaking of blog Makeovers…

Oh wait.  We weren’t speaking of blog makeovers.  Well we are now.  I did a few things to this ol Blog here. First of all, I made it wider.  I love how it unclutters everything.  There is a great tutorial here for how to make your blog wider.  I also did a few things with my background image.  I didn’t like how blogger had a limit of 300k for uploading your own background.  So I uploaded mine to photobucket and then went into the html and added it manually.  Much better!!

I simplified the buttons at the top under my header.  Do you like the different fonts?

homeabout-meblog-designbook-clublink-partiesbuttoncontact

{note these are just images they do not link to the pages.  Scroll up and click on the buttons at the top to go to the different pages}

I also redid the sidebar titles.

bookemailfollowparticipatingsearchselectionsponsors

{these don’t link anywhere either}

So anyway, here is the simplified look. I hope it makes it easier to read.

I also did a makeover for Jenn @ Pickles and Cupcakes.

We did side bar titles:

frame to match teal and whiteframe to match teal and whiteframe to match teal and white

Social Media buttons:

frame to match teal and whiteframe to match teal and whiteframe to match teal and whiteframe to match teal and white

and her signature:

I’m LOVING her makeover.  It completely made her blog come together adding these little touches!!  I love seeing blog design in place so you can see the whole picture.  Click here to see these elements on Jenn’s blog.

OK so let me know what you think about the makeovers.  If you want more information on digital design, click here or you can click BLOG DESIGN at the top.

Father’s Day Printable

Here is what my girls are giving their Dad for Father’s Day.

father's day printable, I'm so glad your mine, dad

I love how the text looks a little like iron.  It’s very manly to me.  I left space at the bottom for them to write “I love you Daddy” and sign their names in their cute elementary school handwriting.  I hope it is special to him.

How to make a flat sheet into a fitted sheet

So I was on the lookout the other day for some fitted sheets.  Guess what, you cannot find just a fitted sheet.  Ok let me rephrase that, you can find a fitted sheet in the 200 thread count itchy scratch sheets.  Once you get to 400 thread count or higher you can only find sets.  And believe me I went to 5 different stores looking.  So if you don’t need a flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases, what are you to do?  Also, what do you do with all the flat sheets you have stacked in the linen closet gathering dust.  That’s when I decided I was going to make flat sheets into fitted.

It was surprisingly easy.  I found this tutorial online from Crafting a Green World.  There is a little bit of math involved but if I can do it you can.

Step 1:  Measure the length of both your mattress and your sheet {note the use what you have at your finger tips tape measure I used}

bed sheet

Then subtract the sheet length from the mattress length.  Do the same for the width.  You will end up with two numbers probably in the 20s {Depending if you bought odd sized sheets or mattress lol}

Step 2: You should now have two numbers in the 20s {most likely}.  Take the smaller number and divide it in half.  This is the MAGIC number {wahahaha}.

Step 3:  Take your magic number and measure out a square from each of the four corners.  All sides of the square should measure your magic number.

step 2

I just took my handy dandy tape measure and measured across from one corner to my magic number and then down from the same corner to my magic number and several spots in between.  I made a dot at each measurement and then connected the dots.

Step 4:  Cut out that corner square

step 4

step 5: Remove the square you cut, bring together the two cut edges and sew along them.  Make sure to bring right sides together.

step 5

step 6:  Cut your elastic.  Use a wide elastic.  Something like a quarter inch is not substantial enough to hold up to the tossing and turning and jumping on the bed that happens.

step 6

Step 7: Sew your elastic along each corner.  Stretching as you go.

step 7

And there you have it.  A flat sheet to a fitted sheet.  It’s really pretty simple.  If you have any questions please ask!!
