The hardest post I’ve ever written…

Yesterday at Totally Tutorials Tuesday, I eluded to the fact that some things have been going on with our family lately.  It’s true.  And in a lot of ways, it has been the hardest thing we have ever gone through.  I don’t want this post to be about the hard or the sad or the depressing.  I want there to be something good that comes from this experience.  Since it isn’t over yet, I cannot tell the entire outcome.  But because of it, I have had to make some changes.

Yes I know, I’m being incredibly vague and will I just get to the point?  The best way I can figure to explain is this:  we trusted some very unscrupulous people.  And we got taken to the cleaners, and court, and the bottom of our barrel.  It’s been a very hard road.  I tend to be a very open, trusting, giving person.  My blog is called measured by the heart.  For me it’s all about doing for others and showing that you love them.  So I am having a hard time with learning that I shouldn’t be so trusting.  Because I want to believe the best in others.

Since this is going to be a big financial mess and it is such a bad time for this to come up {holidays and all}, I have decided to see if there is anything I can do to help.  I have LOVED doing freebies on my blog and I wish I didn’t have to make this difficult choice, but I have decided to open an etsy shop and put some printables in there for a charge.  I don’t know if anyone is even interested in buying printables.  I may fall flat on my face.  But I need to at least put forth as much effort as I can to help my family right now.  Even so, I have tried to price things very affordably.

INTRODUCING: Measured by the Heart’s Etsy shop: Printables and More!!

I only have a few things listed.  Etsy charges to list items and I wasn’t sure if this would take off or maybe no one would even be interested.  So I listed a small amount of things to start.  Here is what you can see:

Printables for $2.

And Crochet items:

I added the crochet items because these are my most popular items on the blog.  If you are interested in checking it out, Please click here.  If you’d like to support me, I would appreciate it.  If this goes nowhere, that’s fine too.  But I had to try.  And hopefully I will be able {down the road} to write the post about what I learned from this and the great miracles that came from it.

You guys have been so supportive of me and my little blog.  I cannot thank you enough.

How to put feathers in hair

I kind of love this look.  I wish it wasn’t quite so “trendy” but I love the feathers in the hair look.  It’s kind of quirky and off the beaten path.  So the other day I found an awesome deal for feathers and went for it.

feather

I didn’t really love the feathers I got but you can still see how to place them.  I’ve heard you can find good feathers in the tackle area of sporting goods stores.  I’ve never actually looked myself, but let me know if you do.  If you buy a feathers in the hair kit or feathers made to put in the hair, they should come with  crimp beads.  If not you will need to get some.

Here are the supplies you need:

See my water bottle that says h2o only.  Yep it’s pink.  It’s my homemade leave in conditioner.

Putting the feathers in is actually pretty easy, here’s the video tutorial:

Introducing Rodan and Fields

As I’m growing older, I have noticed little things with my skin that I haven’t been liking.  I have much more little lines {especially at the corners of my eyes} and my skin is so dry.  I’ve been thinking I needed to get myself a good skin care regimen.  I’ve seen lots of ads that claim lots of things and I wasn’t sure where to go.  Also they seemed really expensive.  So When I got the chance to try one, I jumped at it.

Rodan and Fields has 4 different regimens:

image

Reverse is for brown spots, dullness and sun damage.

image

Anti Age is for lines, wrinkles and loss of firmness.

image

Unblemish is for acne and post acne marks.

image

Soothe is for sensitive irritated skin and facial redness.

You can find out more at Jen’s Rodan and Fields website.  If you would like to join me in trying out this product, just check out Jen’s website.  Remember that the prices shown are for products that last 2 months.  Also, if you would like to sign up to be a preferred customer, Jen will reimburse the preferred customer sign up fee of 14.95.  The advantages of being a preferred customer include 10% off orders and free shipping.  And just in time for the Holidays, Jen is offering to reimburse $50 for the first 4 people who become preferred customers.  Just email her your address after you place your order.  You can find her info under contact me on Her website

Yep that’s me no editing, big teeth and all.  Any guesses on the regimen I chose.  That’s right.  Anti age.  I will be using this product for the next month and then I will show you my after picture.  This will be an all truth judge for yourself and see if this product is for you review.  If you’d like to join me on this skin care journey, check out Jen’s Rodan and Fields website.

How to Brine a Turkey

In honor of Thanksgiving I am going to show you how to make the best Turkey you have ever had!!

First off though I have to say this post is a little long with a lot of reading.  But it is packed full with useful information and worth the read.

Second, I have to apologize for my pictures.  My camera broke {the pics come out good for the top half but black on the  bottom.  Happens with both lenses.  Not sure why.  Anyone know about this?? }  so I had to take these pictures with my cell phone.  But the info is still useful.

turkey done_thumb[1]

I made this the other night for my family and my brother and his wife.  As they were sitting down to seconds I overheard him say, “this is the best dinner I have ever had.”  I promise the extra steps are so worth it here.

You need to start this the day before you want to cook your turkey.  First of all, get out your cooler {that’s right cooler}

turkey step 1_thumb[1]

You need a cooler that is big enough to fit your turkey.  Clean it well.  You are going to put food in this so make sure it is good and clean.

To make your brining liquid, you are going to mix water with equal parts kosher salt and sugar.

turkey step 2_thumb[1]

The recipe is :

10 quarts of water

5 cups of salt

5 cups sugar

This made enough solution for my 23 lb. turkey.

You can either use a quart jar and fill it up 10 times and dump it in the cooler.  Or I used my little handy dandy mug that I got from the hospital when I had my baby.

turkey step 3_thumb[1]

I LOVE these mugs.  Here you can see it has measurements up the side.  32 oz. is one quart.  So fill this one up 10 times and dump it in the cooler.  Then ad your sugar and salt.  Mix it up to dissolve the sugar and salt.

Take your THAWED turkey and remove all the gizzards and pieces from the cavities.

turkey step 4_thumb[1]

Then just put it down into the cooler.  Here comes the important part.

You are going to let the turkey soak in this brining liquid for between 9 and 24 hrs.  But you want to make sure and avoid the Temperature Danger Zone.  This is a temperature range that you don’t want to have food sitting in.  It is between 41 and 140 degrees.  So basically stored food needs to be colder than 41 degrees {refrigerator or freezer} or hotter than 140 degrees {cooking}.  So while you are letting your turkey soak it needs to be less than 41 degrees.  It may be cold enough outside to put it in your garage overnight.  But it depends on where you live and the temperatures there.  If it’s not and you don’t have enough room in your fridge {I know I don’t}.  You can put some ice in with the turkey.  You want to make sure your ice is contained so that it doesn’t melt and dilute the brining solution.  You can use bagged ice.  Just leave it in the bag and make sure it doesn’t leak.  I used these ice packs we have.

turkey step 5_thumb[1]

I threw a bunch of them in.  Whatever you use, just make sure you are careful to avoid that temperature danger zone.  If you have any questions feel free to Contact Me or look it up or ask someone.  This is a very important step and one you don’t want to guess on.  I don’t want anyone getting sick.

Ok so after you have brined your turkey you can cook it like normal.  I have a little tip I learned from Alton Brown on the Food Network.

Since we love moist dark meat and we love moist white meat, but we need to cook the dark meat to a higher temp. than the white, and we don’t want to dry out the white meat or under cook the dark meat, we have a problem.  {did you follow that LONG run on sentence?}

Enter the turkey triangle.

turkey step 6_thumb[1]

Take your foil and fold the top corners down into a triangle.  Then you need to form fit it to the turkey breast.  You want to do this before you put it in the oven [so it’s not hot when you go to fit it}

Just set it aside for later.  According to Alton, the way to cook the turkey is on the bottom rack of the oven.  Set to 500 degrees for a half hour{ I say between 400 and 500 depending on how hot your oven gets}.  Then put on the foil triangle and turn it down to 350 for the duration of cooking.

And here is your finished product:

turkey done_thumb[3]

If you have never brined a bird before, you MUST try this!!  It will be the best turkey you have ever had.  And you will get so many compliments and yummy noises.  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Quirky Tip of the Day~~Scratches

When we were moving into our home, we had a hard time getting the fridge in the door.  We had to take the doors off the fridge to get it in actually.  And the sides got pretty scratched up.

fridge

See how yucky that looks??  So what to do, what to do?  Oh I know, get some of this:

023

It’s Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy.  And I got it at Wally World but it was a little hard to find so you’ll have to look for it.  You could ask someone, but since no one is ever in the paint department that won’t work.  Also, it seems like it is white right?  And the sides of our fridge are black.  Look at the cap not the picture on the can.  Black cap is black paint.

Make sure the fridge is clean and dry and then just spray it.  Then you’ll get this:

fridge 1

Ignoring the glare on the pic, {I took the pics before it was all the way dry} It looks like it never got scratched.  Woohoo!!

And there you go another quick, easy, simple Quirky tip of the Day.

Heelys or Sheelys??

I remember when Heelys burst onto the scene.  They were a big thing, but they seemed to be a boys shoe.  Maybe that was just my perception.  Well not anymore.

SAMSUNG

My girls {especially my oldest} were super excited to try out some Heelys.  We got some Heelys hx2.  It has 2 wheels in each shoe.  This makes it great for younger children.  It helps maintain balance and does not require as much leg strength to lift your toes as you skate.  You can take out one wheel and convert them to a traditional Heely or you can take out both wheels and have a normal pair of shoes.

Normally I would post my pros and cons here but in my honest opinion, there wasn’t much to complain about.  They were fun shoes that my girls loved.  They seem really well made.  The company was great to work with.

One little tip I would give is to watch your children as they get used to their Heelys.  There is a learning curve.  I mean there are wheels on the bottom of their shoes.

Want to learn how to do some great tricks in your Heelys??  Look no further.  My cute daughter made up these great moves and did this video for me.

Click for more Heelys skating info or the Heelys safety playbook.

We liked these so much that I bought a pair for my sister {who is 23} for her bday.  They make a great gift.

Heelys is throwing a Black Friday special!! Between Nov 25-Nov 28, Buy any pair of Heelys, get the second pair for $25. Or buy a Nano, and get a pair of shoes for $25, and get free ground shipping on all orders!

Hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

I was given free product in exchange for this review.  All opinions are 100% mine.  For more information please see my Disclosure.
