Google Friend Connect is being discontinued

Sad News everyone, Google Friend Connect {the followers gadget} is going away.   Google Friend Connect is the gadget on most blogs sidebars that allow you to follow that blog. It looks like this:

Google is discontinuing Friend connect for all non blogger blogs.  This means anyone who has a blog not on blogger.  Like wordpress or type pad or any number of other blogging platforms will loose this gadget.  The rumor I have heard is that it will also be going away for blogger blogs in the future.  Google is trying to promote google + instead.

What does this mean for you?  Well if you follow blogs not on blogger then you will need to find a different way to follow them or you will not be able to get their new posts.  My blog is not on blogger.  I am with wordpress.  There has been a big trend of moving off blogger to wordpress and most blogs that have been around a while {and lots of newer blogs} have moved. You will loose your updates to these blogs and possibly to all blogs in the future.

My suggestion is that you follow via rss feed.  The rss feed will still send you every post the blog makes.  Just look for this symbol on their blog:

Follow me on: RSS

It will most likely be with their social media icons.  It can be a different color or shape even but look for the little dot with the two lines above it.  It should be easily identifiable.  Mine are at the very top of my sidebar Under the welcome tab after my introduction.  Also if you click the subscribe tab you can find it there.  I also have floating buttons on the right side and it is there and also if you scroll to the bottom of my sidebar you can find it there under Follow Along.

Ok so you click on that button then what?  It will take you to a page that looks like this:

rss feed

If you scroll down you can see it has every post from Measured by the Heart.  And if you subscribe it will send them to you.  At the very top on the right side you can see your options for subscribing.  I like to subscribe with google because you can read your posts in Google reader.  But there are lots of different options.  You can also get my posts delivered to your email.

Now that you have subscribed to my rss feed how do you see the posts?  If you subscribed via google, you have two options.  I have a google reader app on my phone and I read all my blogs there.  I sign in to the app with my google account and it brings all my subscriptions to me.  I just flip through and read them all.  I really like this option because I always have my phone with me so I can pull it out when I have some down time and read blog posts.  Also, I like reading blogs because to me they are similar to a magazine.  Short articles that you can put down and come back to easily.

If reading on your phone doesn’t work for you, then you can read them online via google reader.  You just go to google.com/reader.  Instead of signing in to blogger and reading them there, just sign in to google reader and read them there.  Here is what google reader looks like:

It’s really similar to reading in blogger.  All your subscriptions are on the left side and the new posts are in the middle.  You can search through them at the top.  See the red button at the top left.  The one that says subscribe.  You can subscribe to blogs here also.  Just click that button and input the url or a few key words about the blog.  It will search for that blogs feed and bring you the results and you can subscribe right there.

I have also heard good things about reading blogs in Bloglovin.  It is very similar to google reader and the steps are similar.

If you have a blog {even if you are on blogger} it is a VERY good idea to get your readers on your rss feed.  Please please use feedburner or another feed delivery service.  Feedburner is free.  The reason for this is that gfc could very well be a thing of the past for everyone soon.  Also, if you ever want to do something else with your blog {move to a different platform etc.} you can easily bring your feed followers with you.  But only if you have promoted having them on your feed and you use an outside source to manage your feeds.  It gives you tons of flexability and options for whatever you might want to do with your blog in the future.  If this is confusing, leave me a comment and I will do a post about it.

If you want to update your followers and let them know what is going on with Google Friend connect, feel free to link to this post.

You can also follow blogs on Facebook, twitter and via email.   I hope this helps you all.  I know I don’t want to loose all the blogs I follow and I especially don’t want to loose any of you guys!!  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks for reading.

Facebook Profile Picture Size

New Year New blog @ Measured by the Heart

Did you know that you don’t have to have a small square profile pic on Facebook?  Did you know that Facebook gives you much more space to have a bigger {taller} profile pic?  Perhaps you have seen them.  Here’s what mine looks like:

Measured by the Heart

So how do you go about changing yours to take advantage of the space?  Let me give you the dimensions first.  Your picture can be a maximum width of 180 px.  But the height can vary.  The maximum height is 540 and I recommend you just stick with 180 x 540 but you can make it shorter if you prefer.

Open up your favorite design software and make your banner.  I recommend using a picture or logo for sure.  And since you have all this space I also highly recommend putting your blog name on the banner somewhere.  But from there, design it how you want.  Remember that it is a smaller space so lots of wording will be hard to read.  Simpler is better.

Once you have it designed, upload it to facebook just like you would any profile pic.  And viola there it is.

But wait, Facebook cropped it all wierd to use in your news feeds.  What now?  Here is how they cropped mine:

And here is how it looked throughout the site:

Doesn’t look so great does it?  Lets fix it.  Hover over your profile pic and click on Change Picture.

On the next screen look below your pic.  It will say Edit Thumbnail.  Click on that.

Once you click on Edit thumbnail, a box will popup and look like this:

See how it says Drag the image to adjust.  That means you can hold down your mouse button on your Profile Picture and move the pic up and down.  This allows you to choose where you would like it cropped.  Once you’ve got it where you want it, click save.  And there you have it.  One Facebook Banner Profile Picture. You can now enjoy using it all over Facebook.  If you have any questions, I’m happy to help.  Just leave a comment and I will get back with you.  Thanks for reading.

I’m a traveling mom blogger!!

Have you ever had something you wanted but thought you didn’t get?  Have you ever decided you had to let it go because it wasn’t going to happen and then surprise it did?  No, I’m not talking about our house even though this happened there too.  I am super excited to let you all know that I am now a blogger for Traveling Mom!!!

Remember I told you I am passionate about travel??  Well it is SO true.  I wrote to the editor almost a year ago and presented my case.  She was nice but said they weren’t adding new bloggers at the time.  So I moved on.  Many months later, she emailed me back and asked if I was still interested.  Um YES YES YES!!

I promise that I am still just as dedicated to Measured by the Heart.  I will not let you guys down.  In fact, I am learning so much that will help out here too.  Things will only get better.

Let me introduce you guys to Traveling Mom.

From their website:

Welcome to the TravelingMom Blogger Network. This is the place to get the scoop on great family holiday destinations, read funny stories about traveling with kids, find tips on planning a great family vacation and so much more. Our bloggers are professional writers and world travelers who have their own niche in the TravelingMom Blogger Network. From An Adventure TravelingMom to Vegetarian TravelingMom, their names say it all.

I am the Memories Traveling mom and you can read all about me in my first blog post.  I would LOVE it if you guys would click over and read my post.  I would appreciate the feedback and support if you have a minute.

Also, there is a contest going on right now to win a vacation to Aruba!!  I looked and there are superlow entries in this contest.  Especially since it includes everything even airfare.  You can see more about aruba in this video made by Traveling Mom founder Kim Orlando.

How to make a blog button with a grab box

It’s time for another New year, New Blog installment.

New Year New blog @ Measured by the Heart

This time I am going to show you how to make a blog button with a grab box.

What is that exactly you say?  Well a blog button is a little graphic that people can click on and it brings them to your blog.  Like the one above that says New Year New blog etc.  The grab box is the box with a bunch of garble gook in it. That is code that you can copy and paste onto your blog.  If you do that, it will show only the top image and when someone clicks on it, It will take them to my blog here.  Make sense??

Step 1. Make your blog button image.  I like to make mine 125 x 125.  That is a pretty good size overall.  Some people make them bigger but I don’t like that.  Have you ever seen an oversized button that is hanging off of someone’s sidebar because it didn’t fit?  I like things to be organized and pretty.  So if someone’s blog button is too big, I sometimes won’t use it.  You definately don’t want people not using your button because of that.  And you cannot say what size someones sidebar will be.  So stick with 125 x 125 and you should be very safe.

It’s a good idea to keep it simple and uncluttered.  It is only a small area and you don’t want people squinting to read everything or confused  with it.  Put your blog name on the button.  Usually people see these as they are scrolling through a blog so it needs to be something that catches the eye quickly with out too much fuss.

Step 2. Ok so now you have made your image, what to do with it.  You need to upload it somewhere.  I like photobucket.  You can create a free account with them and they are easy to use.  My friend uses Flickr.  That works for her.  If you are on WordPress, you can upload it to your media library.  The point is that you want to get a link to that image. On photobucket it is the direct link.

Step 3. Here comes the coding.  Copy and paste the following into a blank document:

<div align=”center”> <a href=”YOUR BLOG URL HERE target=”_blank”><img alt=”YOUR BLOG NAME HERE” src=”DIRECT LINK TO YOUR BUTTON IMAGE HERE“/></a> </div> <div align=”center”> <form><textarea rows=”6″ cols=”20″><center><a href=”YOUR BLOG URL HERE target=”_blank”><img alt=”YOUR BLOG NAME HERE” src=”DIRECT LINK TO YOUR BUTTON IMAGE HERE“/></a></center></textarea></form> </div>

You then need to replace all the colored text with the required information. So everything in Pink gets replaced with your blog address.  Everything in Orange gets replaced with the name of your blog.  And everything in Blue gets replaced with the url to your image.  {this is from step 2}.

Step 4. Take the code with all the colors replaced with the relevant information.  Paste it into your blog as html code.  And viola you have a blog button with a grab box.  You can use this on your sidebar, in your posts, on your pages.  Pretty much anywhere you can put html.

This can seem confusing and daunting, but if you follow the steps you should be ok.  If you have any questions please feel free to leave me a comment or email me.  I’m happy to help.

If you’d like the chance to win a free blog button for your site, you can enter my January Blog Design giveaway.  And as always, if you want me to do them for you, I design buttons for $10 and you can find more information by visiting my blog design site. {which isn’t designed very well and I need to update it.}

Hope this helps you guys out.  Thanks for reading!!
