Homeade Dishwasher Detergent

You guys know I like to make a lot of my cleaning products right?  If you missed it, you can check out my homemade laundry detergent.

Today I’m going to show you my homemade dishwasher detergent.  It uses a lot of the same ingredients so if you make both of these you really only have to buy one ingredient.  And it lasts FOREVER.  The last batch I made was in January and I still have about 1/2 left.  To be fair, I did make a double batch.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

It’s pretty easy, just measuring and pouring.

Remember, Arm and Hammer washing soda is different from Arm and Hammer laundry soap.  So make sure you get the right stuff.
It cleans really well.  I use 1 teaspoon in the prewash compartment and 1 Tablespoon in the main compartment.   I also use white vinegar instead of jetdry.
Because of the citric acid in the lemi shine, this recipe has a tendency to clump.  I make my mixture and leave it on the counter for the first couple of days.  I stir it every time I pass by.  This is enough to prevent the clumping for me.  I also do NOT store this in a container with a lid.  If you are still having clumping problems, you can add some rice.  Cut the toe off a pair of nylons and fill it with rice then tie a knot.  You can reuse this bundle in your batches.  If you are still having problems, you can try storing it in the fridge.  If all else fails, leave the lemi shine out of the recipe and add 1/2 teaspoon when you start your dishwasher.  This hasn’t been a big issue for me.  I just stir it for a couple days and then we are good to go.
If you do end up with a hard lump, you can pulse it in a food processor until it gets to powder stage.  Then use it .  This is not an issue with my homemade laundry detergent recipe because it does not contain the citric acid in the lemi shine.
Truthfully, this is not a big issue for me at all but I wanted to give some tips in case you run into anything.

  4. I like the recipe. Thank you. But I’m not sure what the lemi shine is. Can you tell me? Thanks.

    • Hi Gail,
I’m so glad you might try this recipe. It’s kinda addicting. Once you try homemade cleaners you start looking for any other cleaner you can make at home. Lemi shine is a product you can buy at any store. I get mine at Walmart in the cleaning supply area. It’s by the dishwasher detergent. It’s an additive. Similar to jet dry or something like that. It comes in liquid or powder. For this recipe, get the powder. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  5. I made this and I put it in my mason jar and the next day it was hard ……. I did this two different times and it happen both times. Any advice ?

    • Bev,
I am so sorry I forgot to include something important in the post. Thanks for reminding me and I am sorry for your troubles. This mixture can clump because of the citric acid in the lemi shine. I always leave mine on the counter for the first couple of days and stir it everytime I pass by. I do NOT store it in a container with a lid. This is enough to prevent a hard brick for me. If you are still having problems, you can put some rice in the bottom. Cut the toe off a pair of nylons and put some rice in it. You can reuse this with your batches of dishwasher soap. I’ve heard storing it in the fridge also helps prevent the clumping. But I don’t have to do either of these two steps.
You can take your clumped mixture and pulse it in a food processor until it reaches powder stage again and use it. Again I am sorry for the omission and the problems it caused you. This is not an issue with the homemade laundry soap because it does not contain the citric acid {lemi shine}.
