How to spray paint an upholstered chair

I have these chairs.  I’ve had them for a while.  I love how comfortable they are {made by lazyboy} but they are not the cutest.  See what I mean:

They are ok but a little plain.  I was thinking of recovering them but they are harder to do.  They are not your basic take off the seat, stretch fabric, staple and be done.  They would require sewing and fitting exactly right and I just didn’t want to tackle that.

I have been reading lots of posts lately about people painting everything.  From rugs, to curtains to furniture.  So I decided to give it a try.  I found a product called Simply Spray.  They have upholstery spray paint.

I agonized about which color to pick.  Go with black and play it safe or be daring with Caribbean blue?  Everyone said Caribbean blue for sure.  So blue it was.

The paint was easy to use.  If you have ever spray painted before, you can do this.  Just pull the tab, aim the nozzle and spray.

I will say that this product tends to clog a lot.  If you open a can, you need to use it all or you won’t really be able to come back to it.  The color also will dry darker.  Make sure and spray in even strokes all over your piece or it will be splotchy.

Here’s how mine came out.

I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t love the color.  I should have gone with black or better yet grey.  But that is just a problem with my choice.  You might like it.  I think maybe if I paint the chair base white, maybe it will help.  The spray paint itself was easy to work with.  If you try to cover a darker fabric, it won’t work.  You can only take a piece darker.  You cannot lighten it.  And if you have a pattern in your upholstery, it will show through.  It seems more like I dyed this chair than painted it.  Which I like better.  It doesn’t come off on clothes and I haven’t had chipping, pealing etc. Which you can get with paint.

I just found out that Simply Spray is giving away a $50 visa gift card on their facebook page.  If you are thinking of trying this you might want to enter and then go get some.

What do you guys think?  Do you like the color?  Would you ever try spray painting a piece of furniture?

  1. Connie – I love the colour – its gorgeous. I was thinking “wow it would stunning with white” then I read your sentence about painting the wood white. I say go for White – distress a little -and it will look even better. I think it still looks really good as it is though. We cant get that upholstery spray paint here in NZ yet – I will keep looking out for it though. xxx Nat
