Moloka’i {Book Club}

This was such an interesting read.  I have not ever read anything like it.  I am happy to introduce this month’s book club selection:

Moloka’i by Alan Brennert

This book is set in Hawaii and talks of a little known time and place.  I had no idea this was a piece of our history.  Did you know there was a leprosy colony on the island of Moloka’i?  Rachel, a young Hawaiian girl soon finds out too much about this life and disease.

 I could not put this book down.  I was transported to an island where people were exiled.  My eyes were completely opened. I almost couldn’t believe what I was reading.  Did this really happen?  I thought leprosy was a disease of the Bible.  I had no idea it was in our past.  And the life of those living with it was both tragic and brave.

This is a novel you will remember.  And hopefully want to talk about.  If you have read this book, leave me a comment.  Were you as blindsided as I was {seriously…leprosy in Hawaii?}

If you don’t have a chance to read this book right now, feel free to pin this post and come back to it.  You can find all my recommended reads by clicking book club at the top.  Check that page when you need a new book to read.  Or if you want to talk about one of our book club selections, leave me a comment.
