My mom is the one who taught me how to bake bread over a campfire. We have done the stick method…you know you wrap a piece of bread dough around a stick and cook it like you would a marshmallow. But it always took forever and was crispy outside and doughy inside. Not great. So she came up with this method of baking bread and it worked so well.
To be honest, since it was our first time trying this method we were a little shocked it worked so well. I shouldn’t have been because my mom is the expert in all things bread.
To start out, use your favorite yeast bread recipe. My mom brought over a huge batch of dough. Shape it and put it in your loaf pans. Then let it rise.
We put our pan into a dutch oven but you could skip this step and put it directly onto your grate.
You will need a BIG pot to cover this and make your oven.
As you can see, we put some large rocks into the fire pit. This is because you need to have your bread elevated above the heat. If not, the bottom will burn.
Then you just let it cook. Check it every so often until it is done.
Doesn’t it look beautiful? It didn’t taste like smoke or campfire either. Let me show you the bottom so you can see it didn’t burn.
Not bad for our first time huh? This would be so great at the end of the night with some yummy jam as you sit around the fire.
I hope you try it and let me know your results. If you like this tutorial, please pin it for future reference.
