Printable…O Holy Night

Merry early Christmas everyone!! I truly LOVE all you guys and wanted to thank you for your support of my little blog this year. I have so enjoyed getting to know you all. As a Thank you and an early Christmas present, I made this printable for you guys.

Click on image to download your high quality copy.

The words are lyrics from the Christmas carol O Holy Night.  I was in church yesterday and a lovely young man with a beautiful voice sang this carol.  These words hit me hard.  This could easily be my motto.   As you can tell, I am all about Love one another.  And be kind to others, and treat others well.  And Love is definitely my driving force.    So these lyrics were perfect.  I made it in colors that can easily be Christmas but also you could keep it up year round.

I hope you all enjoy this printable.  And I hope you have an amazing holiday filled with peace and joy!!

It’s a crafty Christmas…cookies 4 santa plate

Remember my Good Morning Cereal Bowls?  Well I made this cookies 4 santa plate the same way.

cute cookies for santa plate

I would have done it in red or even black, but they didn’t have either color.  So I went with turquoise and did a snowflake theme.  I think it works.  What do you think??

The middle has a quote written in a circle.  It says:

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”~Dr. Seuss

It’s a crafty Christmas…freezer paper stenciling

Hello all.  I’m back with another DIY Christmas present idea.  You can see all the other Homemade present ideas by clicking here.

Today I am going to show you freezer paper stenciling.

027

We took this plain red shirt and put the Captain America symbol on it.  I got this idea from Cheryl @  I am momma hear me roar.  She has an awesome blog full of lots of boy tutorials if you want to go check it out.

Ok so first things first, you have to find what you want to put on your shirt.  We did several with symbols and sayings.  Here are a few other examples:

029  031

Princess in training and Homework is Evil.  I apologize for the bad pics, my camera broke and then my laptop with photoshop on it needs a new motherboard.  Thankfully it is still under warranty but we have to ship it back and wait and wait.  And I didn’t iron the shirts.  Actually I never iron but I could have thrown it in the dryer  with a damp cloth.  Oh well too late now.

Ok so enough of that on with the tutorial.  I’m showing you how to make the captain America shirt but you can apply these steps to whatever you want to stencil.

After you decide what you want on the shirt you need to make the stencil.  You must use freezer paper for this.  Not wax paper.  Must be freezer paper.  You need a wax side and a non wax side.

 IMG_20111119_180830

You can print out your image or I have been known to just put my freezer paper up to the computer screen and trace it.  I like this idea because the screen is lit up and makes for good tracing.  {If I was doing a saying, I would just type it up in word and then trace it on the freezer paper.}  If you print it out, then you would trace it onto the freezer paper from there.  Remember everywhere you want to show up on the shirt needs to be cut out.  I used an exacto knife.

When you are done, you will have this:

IMG_20111119_181318

Now it’s time to get out your handy dandy iron.   {this is my mommas iron, yes I do own one.  But I hardly use it so it hasn’t been unpacked from the move yet.  Pathetic, I know.}

IMG_20111119_181452

Making sure the freezer paper is wax side down, take your iron and iron it onto the shirt.  It will make it stick down like so:

IMG_20111119_181548

It is now all stuck down and won’t let the paint bleed through.  For paint, you must must use fabric paint.  Look on the bottles at the craft store.  It will say for fabric.  Just dab a little on your brush and paint it on the shirt.

IMG_20111119_182346

You can use different colors like we did here if you want.  The next step is my favorite.  You peel up the freezer paper and pull it off.

IMG_20111119_182415

This is the instant gratification step where you get to see what it looks like.

When it’s all pulled off…Tada!!

IMG_20111119_182645

We went back in later and filled in the star free hand.  Now you may think you are done.  But no…there is one last step.  You need to heat set the image.  After all the paint is dry, you just go over it again with your iron.  You can put down a towel and iron over the towel if you want, just make sure the shirt gets warm so it will heat set.  I did all of mine directly on the image.  If you do this, make sure it is completely dry first.

And there you have it, one Captain America shirt!!

It’s a crafty Christmas…lifesaver necklaces

lifesaver necklaces

We are making these cute little necklaces for my nieces and the girls friends.  It seems every time someone comes over to play and they see them sitting out, they gravitate toward them and make cute exclamations like “oh how cute” or “ooh I like that”.  So I think it is a winner for girls.

You start out with a standard washer in a bigger size.

SAMSUNG

My hubbs brought me home a whole box of these.  Wasn’t that nice??  I think they would look awesome in even bigger sizes too.  I used some scrap book paper I had around and just traced the washer onto the paper and then cut it out.

SAMSUNG

The next step is to glue it onto the washer.  I have used both modge podge and spray adhesive for this.  Both work.  The modge podge takes longer to dry but other than that they were pretty similar.  Don’t use things like hot glue because it will add lumps of glue under the paper and you want something that will let it lay really flat.  Also, make sure you glue it on so it sticks well.  You don’t want to make these all up and then have them peeling off.

After you glue it on, turn it over to the backside.  You will see some paper over lap where it is bigger than the washer.

SAMSUNG

Take your scissors and trim around the outside.  Don’t worry about the over lap in the center hole.

When you get it all trimmed up and it is securely affixed on and all dry, you need to grab your Dimensional Magic.  It comes in a bottle and looks like this:

You can do so many things with it, and it lasts FoReVeR.  You will put a thinish layer on the top of your paper.

SAMSUNG

It goes on a bit cloudy but dries clear.  You want to make sure and pop any bubbles you may get so they don’t harden.  Then you just let it sit and dry.

SAMSUNG

Once it’s dry, thread your string through the middle and there you have it.  Lifesaver necklaces!!

Hope your girls enjoy!!  Thanks for reading!!

    It’s a crafty Christmas…Photo blocks

If you remember, I am showing you guys some of the DIY presents I made to give to people.  You can see the first tutorial here:  Good Morning Cereal Bowls

Today I am going to show you the photo blocks I made.

    photo blocks

My mom personally requested two of these blocks for her desk at work.  She wanted pictures off all her grandkids and the blocks don’t take up too much space.

These blocks started out as a fence post from the good ol Home Depot.

We just chopped it into 4×4 pieces.  Then I sized my photos accordingly, printed them and glued them on.  I learned a thing or two along the way.  I first tried to modge podge the photos onto the blocks.  The modge podge left glue lines all over the photo.  I thought it was supposed to dry clear.  It did not.  I gave it several chances.  It also had a tendency to wrinkle the photo.  I read somewhere on some blog that the thing to use was spray adhesive since it doesn’t wrinkle the photos.  So I went out and got this:

    032

It’s true, it didn’t wrinkle the photos.  At all.  But it was a bit annoying because the pictures didn’t affix amazingly.  And I had to go back and respray them.  Also the spray adhesive got all over my fingers and hands and didn’t wash off.  I used this trick to get rid of sticky finisher and it came off rather well.  But I also had over spray all over my table.  Yucky.  I even sprayed these inside a box to eliminate over spray.  It gets all over.  So a little annoying, but better overall outcome.

You only need 5 pics per block because you don’t need one for the bottom.  I tried to get a picture showing the different sides but that was easier said than done.  Here is the best one:

    photo blocks 1

These things are darling.  And I want some for around my home.  {If I ever get around to making more lol}  I left a little border around the photos but you can make them all match up if you want to.

I hope you are enjoying the crafty Christmas series and I hope these tutorials help you with your gift giving.  If you have any questions, let me know.  Thanks for reading!!

    It’s a crafty Christmas…

    Every year, we have 32 people to buy presents for NOT including us and our children.  That’s A LOT!!  We end up with 8 family parties scattered through out December.  It makes Christmas a month long event for us and we wouldn’t have it any other way!!  But buying for  SO many people can be tricky.  Especially this year.  {Did you read my sob story?}

I am such a cheap thrifty person that I just cannot bring myself to run to the mall and buy buy buy for everyone.  But I don’t want them to get the “homemade” present.   I don’t want us to be the “oh great they got my name” family.  And I know Christmas isn’t about the presents, but I also know the reality is that it does matter to a lot of people.  And I do want them to have something nice from us.

So, Long story not so short, I had a “super Saturday” of sorts and made a whole bunch of things that I hope will be nice presents for people but also were very inexpensive.

    This month, I will be sharing them with you so you can make them for the people on your list too!! {what a long intro, I seem to be a rambler lately}

Our very first ever Christmas Craft is:

    Good Morning Cereal Bowls

cute personalized cereal bowls    draw on dishes

These are so easy to make.  You just need to find these markers:

    porcelaine paint pen

I looked first at Wally world.  No go.  Then I went to Hobby Lobby.  They either didn’t carry these or they didn’t know where they were.  So I went on a last ditch effort to Michaels.  Not only did they have them but the people were super nice.  At first she didn’t know exactly where they were, but she didn’t give up and just say sorry we don’t have it {unlike someone at a different store} she got on her walkie talkie, asked where they were and walked me to them.  I will be shopping at Michaels more often for sure!!

They are called Porcelaine 150.  They have Porcelaine 160 which is supposed to be frosted.  I’m excited to try them.  But for this project I wanted a strong readable line.  They come in all sorts of colors {I got three different colors and the projects with them are coming up}.  They do run about $4 for one.  Normally I wouldn’t pay $4 for a marker but these are so worth it.  They go a long long way.  We made at least 20 different projects with one pen.

I got my dishes at the  dollar store.  Then it’s just write on them.

The one tip I have is…Try not to go over your writing again.  It builds up the paint from the marker and isn’t as clean and nice.

    draw on dishes

I’m considering having my kids draw a little picture on the bottom of the bowl.

    cute personalized cereal bowls

That way when people eat their cereal they will uncover the picture.  I’m undecided.  As a mom I would LOVE that pic from my kids while they are young.  But there is also something to be said for simple.  What do you think?

The last thing to do is bake your dishes.  Put them in the oven while it is still cool.  Then heat it up to 350.  Let it bake for 30 mins.  Turn the oven off and let them cool inside.  Then pull them out and use them.  This will make them food safe and dishwasher safe.  I have used and washed mine  and they were just fine.

I hope you enjoy these cereal bowl gift ideas.  Let me know if you decide to make some yourself.
