How to color the tips of your hair

My girls recently had crazy hair day at school.  We decided we wanted to try out a temporary color on their hair.  By temporary I mean it washed out the next day in their first bath.  It came out easily with a regular shampoo.  I think it was quite cute.  You’ll never guess what we used.

My oldest daughter “Love” is NOT a girly girl.  She likes to be a tomboy.  So we did more urban colors on her hair.  This picture is the morning after.  She slept like normal and didn’t get any color on her pillow.  We used watercolor paint for the hair color.  It’s completely washable.

Want to see how we did it?

A few tips.  I would not do a whole head of hair like this.  Ever.  It would be a yucky mess.  This method works best with little pieces.  Also the paint will harden as it dries.  You can brush it out or it will soften as they sleep.

How to put feathers in hair

I kind of love this look.  I wish it wasn’t quite so “trendy” but I love the feathers in the hair look.  It’s kind of quirky and off the beaten path.  So the other day I found an awesome deal for feathers and went for it.

feather

I didn’t really love the feathers I got but you can still see how to place them.  I’ve heard you can find good feathers in the tackle area of sporting goods stores.  I’ve never actually looked myself, but let me know if you do.  If you buy a feathers in the hair kit or feathers made to put in the hair, they should come with  crimp beads.  If not you will need to get some.

Here are the supplies you need:

See my water bottle that says h2o only.  Yep it’s pink.  It’s my homemade leave in conditioner.

Putting the feathers in is actually pretty easy, here’s the video tutorial:

star hair in time for the 4th of July

star hair step 1

Here it is, the tutorial for star hair. I got the idea for this hair style from this great website. I get some many comments and questions whenever my girls wear this hair style.  We usually do it for independence day every year.  It does take more time but is so worth it!!

Step 1: make a square section of hair in the front.  I work with damp hair for this style.  It really helps with frizzies and flyaways.

star step 1

Step 2: split the remaining hair into 4 quadrants and pull them into a hair tie like so:

star step 2

These are the five points of your star.

Step 3: split each little pony in two and braid it.  You are then going to bring it over and attach it with the braid clock wise.  Just like this:

star step 3

see how the braids are starting to form a star shape?  Continue all around and let the ends just hang in the middle

Step 4: Once you get your braids connected all the way around gather all the ends from the middle and make them into and Easy Bun.

star step 4

This isn’t the best picture for this but see how the braids form the star shape?  This is pretty cute left like this but it can be hard to tell for sure that it is a star.  So we need to emphasize the star shape.

Step 5:  Take a ribbon {you need this fairly long} and wrap it around the braided sections.  I usually start and finish on the bottom points.

star step 5

wrap all the way around all the braided sections and then secure the ribbon.  You now have this great star hairstyle:

I hope you enjoy this tutorial.  Let me know if you make this hair style and if you have any questions please let me know also.

Quirky Tip of the Day 2

It’s time for another edition of Quirky Tip of the Day!! {Imagine that said in a cheesy game show hosts voice}  But in all seriousness people, this is an excellent tip.

How to make your own Leave in conditioner!!  I use this daily on my girls hair.  We have long thick hair in this family and no matter what I do, we play the tangle game.  I promise you things go easier if you use this on those tangles.

I’m also all about use what you have and since I cannot always run to the store in the morning before school {when we realize we have run out} this recipe is a must have!!

images

I use a spray bottle this size.  You can find them everywhere.  If not in the hair aisle, check the cleaning supplies or garden areas.  These size bottles are so much better.  They hold a lot so you are not refilling all the time and they spray well.  It gives better easier coverage.

Making this is VERY simple.  All you do is put some of your regular conditioner into the bottle.  For this size bottle, I use 1/4- 1/2 cup.  I don’t really measure, I just have gotten used to how much {approximately} it takes.

The next step is important.  You must use HOT water.  If you don’t, the conditioner won’t mix with the water and you will have cold water and lumps of conditioner.  You need HOT water for it to mix together.

Fill up the bottle with HOT water but leave about 2 inches from the top empty.  You need this empty space to be able to shake the mixture up.

And that’s all folks!!  If you find you like more conditioner in your mixture you can use more but be careful.  If you put too much the hair will become saturated.  Like when you haven’t rinsed enough after a shower.  But feel free to play around with it.  This is a total lifesaver in a family with 3 little girls.

So there you have it.  Leave in conditioner.  Simple. Easy. Works.

how to do a rope braid

Another easy hair tutorial.  This really is an easy braid to do but there are a few step that you have to follow.  Once you get it down it will be fast and simple but if you don’t follow the steps then your twist will just unravel.

I started by pulling my daughters hair into a pony tail.  This is a quick hairdo I do for school days a lot.  Then I do several twist braids with the pony tail hair.

{I apologize for the pic quality.  It was early and dark and we were trying to be quiet to keep the little one sleeping.  You should still be able to tell the steps to take and there is a video at the end}

Grab two sections of hair and you are going to twist each strand individually.  You have to twist both sections clock wise first.

step 1

step 2

Then you are going to take your two sections and twist them together but counter clockwise.  This keeps the twist braid from untwisting.

step 3

Clear as mud right??  Ok here’s the video:

Let me know if you have any questions.

T shirt Headband

I do a 5 strand braid in my girls hair as a hair headband every so often.  Today as I was doing that I thought to my self, “self you could so make that as a t shirt head band.”  So I did.
step 9
{sorry about the rubbish pictures, I craft a lot at night when the light is bad}
First, take an old t shirt that you won’t mind cutting up.  I used one of my hubbys that never fit him.  Then you are going to want to cut strips horizontally starting at the bottom of the shirt.
step 0
First cut off the hem line.  Put that aside, we will use it to make the flower.  Then cut five more strips.
step 1
Once you have them all cut, tie one end into a knot.  This will give you a place to start braiding from and it will keep it from unraveling.  Spread out your strands so you have five long lines.
step 2
You are now going to take the first strand on the right side.  This will be your weaving strip.  Weave it through the other four by going under, over, under, over.  Then put it down to be the last strand now.
step 3
Repeat this.  Always use the strand to the far right as your weaving strand and then leave it down as the last strip and start again with the strand from the far right.  Always go under, over, under, over.
step 4
Keep going until you have braided the entire length.

step 5
Tie a know in the opposite end when you are finished braiding.  At this point you can measure your head and sew both ends together cutting off the excess.  I opted to leave mine as a strand and tie it under my head.  I don’t like when head bands get stretched out and won’t stay in place.  Since t shirts can be stretchy anyways,I can now synch it up as it stretches.
step 6
At this point you could leave your headband as is.  It looks like a cute braided head band, but I thought it was a little too plain.
 step 7
Remember the hemmed edge we set aside from earlier.  I decided to use it to make a rolled flower embellishment.  Start at one end and fold it in.  Then twist your fabric as you wrap it around.  I used a needle and thread to tack it every so often.

step7
After using my needle and thread to sew it onto the headband, I still thought it looked a little frumpy.  It was better but still plain.

step 8
So I decided to add some beads.  I took several sizes and sewed them on in random order.  Much better don’t you think.  It’s amazing what a little pop of contrast can do to a project.
step 9
And here once again is the finished project.  Not bad for a quickie after the kids are in bed project.  Again I apologize for the bad pics.  I would love to see yours if you make one of these.  It would be cute in different fabric.  I can see a cute little girl wearing this in polka dots or a pop of bright pink.  So many possibilities.
