My glazing technique

great glazing tutuorial

Since I have been going crazy over paint this past little while, I thought it might be a good time to show you my glazing technique.  The good news is I found a good color for my home.  Yay!!  Now I just have to paint it all. Painting furniture is an easy way to update an older piece.  I like to paint furniture better than walls.  You can usually get away with spraying furniture.  I generally like a glazed look on my pieces.  I think it gives it another layer of dimension. To start out … [Read more...]

Paint Paint Paint

measuredbytheheart.com: swatches

Want to see what I have been up to all weekend? That's right, I painted and painted.  And I HATE it!! It's kinda hard to tell in this pic, but I was going for a warm greige.  A really warm grey.  I am so a warm person.  I like a home to feel like a snuggly blanket.  Like you can just melt into it and be comfortable.  This color has a wierd purple undertone.  And it is so cold it feels like you have to sit up straight and have perfect posture in the space.  Yuck!! I don't know why I … [Read more...]

How to spray paint an upholstered chair

Measured by the Heart: chair before spray paint

I have these chairs.  I've had them for a while.  I love how comfortable they are {made by lazyboy} but they are not the cutest.  See what I mean: They are ok but a little plain.  I was thinking of recovering them but they are harder to do.  They are not your basic take off the seat, stretch fabric, staple and be done.  They would require sewing and fitting exactly right and I just didn't want to tackle that. I have been reading lots of posts lately about people painting everything. … [Read more...]

Not just a chalkboard

cute chalk board painting

When we first moved into our house there was this space in our kitchen that was just a little off.  Let me show you what I mean: It was this blank space next to the fridge.  I think it needed top cabinets.  But we had just put a sizeable amount down on the house and I wasn't sure I could match the cabinets.  I also have this thing about redoing perfectly good cabinets{like painting them} so I decided to do something else. I was thrifting and I found this awesome painting. Isn't it … [Read more...]

cookies 4 santa plate

plate.jpg

Remember my Good Morning Cereal Bowls?  Well I made this cookies 4 santa plate the same way.  I would have done it in red or even black, but they didn’t have either color.  So I went with turquoise and did a snowflake theme.  I think it works.  What do you think?? The middle has a quote written in a circle.  It says: “And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It … [Read more...]

Good Morning Sunshine cereal bowls

cereal-bowl.jpg

Every year, we have 32 people to buy presents for NOT including us and our children.  That’s A LOT!!  We end up with 8 family parties scattered through out December.  It makes Christmas a month long event for us and we wouldn’t have it any other way!!  But buying for  SO many people can be tricky.  Especially this year.  {Did you read my sob story?} I am such a cheap thrifty person that I just cannot bring myself to run to the mall and buy buy buy for everyone.  But I don’t want … [Read more...]

Quirky Tip of the Day~~Scratches

fridge.jpg

When we were moving into our home, we had a hard time getting the fridge in the door.  We had to take the doors off the fridge to get it in actually.  And the sides got pretty scratched up. See how yucky that looks??  So what to do, what to do?  Oh I know, get some of this: It’s Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy.  And I got it at Wally World but it was a little hard to find so you’ll have to look for it.  You could ask someone, but since no one is ever in the paint … [Read more...]

Thrifted Desk Redo

chippiness_thumb[1]

As promised here is the tutorial for my red desk.  I love how it came out.  Here is what I started with: I got this desk at the thrift store for $20.  Score!!  But I didn’t love the yellowy wood.  So I started with a black base coat. I didn’t worry too much about getting a very solid coat because I knew it was just the base coat.  But I wanted to be able to sand and have the black show through.  I wanted it chippy and worn looking.  I have used candle wax before but this time I … [Read more...]

A Simple Lamp makeover

cute lamp makeover tutorial

I got these two lamps and their shades at our local thrift store.  They were only $5 a piece.  Not a bad deal.  Here they are before: Nothing to write home about but they definitely had potential. The first thing I did was give a good spray paint to the base.  I used Oil Rubbed Bronze since they were a bronze to begin with. Now on to the shades.  Here they were before: This is the easiest makeover ever.  It is all just spray-paint.  I sprayed the shades Krylon Burgundy. I … [Read more...]
